Heard Around Our Towns
There is news, and then there's lots of talk...

In Bloomingburg –
The big question starting to ricochet around the global press is how long the Hasidic influx to the village and its development will continue, and whether reports of continuing FBI investigations are real. Of course, charges are different from court actions, especially when it comes to buildings and forcing people to move out. But at least we can see why this story keeps gaining "legs."

In Ellenville –
We checked in at the Nevele's offices this past week and found everyone VERY busy, having moved past previous legal challenges to what seems like a final push for financing for the former resort's new life as a family sports destination. According to CEO Michael Treanor, the big word should be coming by mid- to late-July. Fingers crossed, everyone!

In Sullivan County –
Seems everyone's moving to a new charter system of government, with a county executive, in line with its neighbors in Orange and Ulster counties. Guess all those shared meetings had an effect... Simultaneously, Democratic Women of Sullivan County hosted all the new candidates coming forth to challenge freshman congressman John Faso. We'll see who comes out ahead of the regional pack.

In Wawarsing –
The town GOP held their caucus last week, nominating Terry Houck for supervisor alongside Paul McAndrews and Eric Friedman for town board. The event, we have heard, had some controversy as party members raised issues. Meanwhile, the town's Dems, with competing factions, again postponed its date for a caucus earlier this week, pushing it out past the previous June 28 date.

In Orange County –
What's this year's big battlefield? How about Legoland, which is engendering stronger views on both sides, especially in regards to local property values and traffic effects. They're taking the battle all over the county now, enlisting chambers of commerce against ad hoc citizen groups. More as the issue progresses.

In Ulster County –
Last Friday, Wawarsing's Mike Wendel was able to get the county Conservative Party to back him against incumbent county comptroller Elliott Auerbach. On Monday, he was sentenced to three years' probation and an order to NOT be within 500 feet of the man he's challenging, or his family, if he doesn't want to face prison. Now, the Conservatives are reconsidering their endorsement given the fact that Wendel didn't inform them of his legal problems (even though they were quite public).
